About

Overview of course initiatives (research content)

This course has three pillars: education, research, and contribution to the community.

1 Education

We aim to develop human resources who can be involved in dementia prevention. In undergraduate education, I am in charge of lectures such as disease theory, dementia prevention special lectures in graduate school education, and dementia prevention seminars. We will make it possible to acquire the qualifications of certified dementia area examination technicians and dementia prevention specialists.

2 Research

(1) Development of early detection tools useful for dementia prevention

It has been reported that in Alzheimer's dementia and Lewy body dementia, olfactory impairment appears before memory impairment. There is a demand for the development of a test method that can detect this olfactory disorder at an early stage. The olfactory function test kits that exist so far are not designed for early detection of olfactory disorders in dementia, so they take time and are not highly accurate. Therefore, we aim to develop a test kit that can detect olfactory disorders in dementia early, easily, and accurately.

(2) Development of useful tools for prevention

In parallel with the development of the olfactory function test kit, we will establish aromatherapy to improve olfactory dysfunction. We have already reported a blend of aromas that are effective for dementia's olfactory disorders and cognitive dysfunction (day: rosemary camphor and lemon, night: true lavender and sweet orange), but we will further upgrade this. We aim to develop aroma blends.

3 Regional contribution

We will support efforts to prevent dementia in the community using preventive tools and carry out awareness-raising activities. We plan to continue activities to disseminate the "Tottori Method Dementia Prevention Program", which we received research funds from Tottori Prefecture and the Nippon Foundation and examined in Houki Town. I would also like to collaborate with the Japanese Society for Dementia Prevention, of which I serve as chairman.
