Features of the Division

Our research focus covers the fields of diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, and radiation oncology. Our overall goal is to contribute to the development of medical treatment in Japan, and internationally. To this end, we conduct original investigations focused on resolving problems faced in clinical work. We seek to undertake novel and innovative research rather than simply following other researchers. Our research projects in each field are described below:

1. Diagnostic radiology
Our research in this field involves research using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and positron emission tomography (PET). We are currently investigating the pathophysiology of diseases using both morphological and functional imaging techniques.

1) Application of 3D pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling MR imaging to several central nervous system diseases
2) Application of hybrid and pure iterative reconstruction of CT to patients with cerebrovascular disease
3) Application of diffusion weighted MR imaging to diseases of female pelvis
4) Application of dual-energy CT to cardiovascular diseases
5) Correlation of FDG-PET/CT and WHO classification the tumor stage in thymic epithelial tumors
6) FDG-PET/CT for evaluating response to treatment in malignant tumor(multicenter study)

2. Interventional radiology
Interventional radiology (abbreviated to IVR or IR; also known as image-guided surgery) is a medical specialization that performs minimally invasive treatments, using radiological imaging to guide surgical procedures. We focus on basic research and clinical research into interventional treatment.

1) Basic research and clinical examination of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in the treatment of painful neoplastic lesions of the bone (such as metastatic bone tumor, chordoma and osteoid osteoma)
2) Clinical study of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in the treatment of painful benign and/or malignant vertebral fracture
3) Basic study of covered esophageal stent for the treatment of esophagotracheal fistula without esophageal stricture
4) Basic study of transient pulmonary hypertension in ethanol sclerotherapy for patients suffering from vascular malformation
5) Clinical study of the utility of transfemoral intervention with 3-French catheter system
6) Clinical study of stent graft treatment for the aortic aneurysm

3. Radiation oncology
Our research focuses on the development of sophisticated radiotherapy techniques and the evaluation of radiation effects on normal organs exposed to radiation fields.
1. Investigation of lung perfusion using a peripheral blood circulation model and CT
2. Investigation of lung perfusion changes following radiotherapy by CT
3. Investigation of movement of lung tumor during radiotherapy, and appropriate target delineation by 4D-CT

4. Investigation of intensive modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) dose escalation for prostate cancer with target delineation using diffusion weighted MR imaging
5. Evaluation of radiation effects on the parotid gland using high-resolution MR imaging lution MR imaging
