Features of the Division

Our division has produced many specialists on gastroenterology, hepatology and nephrology since 1947. These physicians work as not only specialists, but also as generalists in internal medicine in communities throughout Japan. In addition, our division has trained many competent researchers in basic and clinical medicine, as well as clinicians.

Basic Research Areas

Hepatology group

  1. Development of novel therapies for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) targeting YAP (Yes-associated protein)
  2. Roles of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/ nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
  3. Effects of pemafibrate in NAFLD/NASH
  4. Introduction of the gamification in educating ultrasonography
  5. A vein-viewing application depicting abdominal wall varices for the diagnosis of non-treated gastroesophageal varices

Gastroenterology Group

  1. Epidemiological study of the relation between lifestyle and cancers of the digestive system
  2. Relation between Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer
  3. Microstructure Analysis of Peyer's Patches in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  4. Basic research on PDT (photodynamic therapy) and PDD (photodynamic diagnosis)
  5. Pathogenesis of esophageal achalasia (genome analysis)

Nephrology Group

  1. Imaging techniques in nephrology
    • Noninvasive assessment of renal biopsy with an activatable fluorescent probe
    • Noninvasive diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease
    • Renal elasticity in chronic kidney disease
    • Renal morphological change in chronic kidney disease
  2. Physiology of tubular epithelial cells
    • Uromodulin and renal solute and water transport mechanisms
    • Role of Zinc in salt retention
    • Sodium glucose cotransporter beyond glycemic control
  3. Pathophysiology of tubular injury in diabetes mellitus
    • Endoplasmic reticulum stress in renal steatosis
    • Heme oxygenase for the protection of endoplasmic reticulum stress
    • Cysteinyl-t-RNA synthetase in the mitochondrial energetics
