From a community with strong roots in tradition, we are striving to raise health professionals with world-class medical training and care skills

Departmental Aims

The Sanin region, where Tottori University Faculty of Medicine is located, has one of the largest aging populations in the country. With this regional characteristic in mind, we teach advanced medicine and cutting-edge treatments, and train individuals to put knowledge into practice. We aim to raise independent and innovative physicians who can play a significant role in medical communities globally as well as locally.

Course Characteristics

Our university has introduced a new educational program called the “Model Core Curriculum”. In this curriculum, we spend two-thirds of the semester focusing on the traditional basic curriculum taught nationwide. For the rest of the semester, we offer, founded on our educational philosophy, a variety of courses, including seminars, that students can choose from.

At the end of the 4th year, medical students take the Common Achievement Test and, if determined to have reached a satisfactory level of competence, they will start clinical practice in their fifth year. Clinical practice at our university hospitals employs clinical clerkships, in which medical students participate as a member of the medical team and interact with patients under the supervision of senior physicians.
The diversification in recent years of society’s needs for medical education demands for highly creative health professionals. Our university has transitioned from a traditional knowledge-based educational system to offering the new curriculum which aims to teach students problem-solving skills and allows them to choose subjects they are interested in. We also offer tutorial courses where students in small groups participate in active learning. If desired, students can also select a research laboratory and perform medical research in their subject of interest for a certain period. To accommodate such a diverse curriculum, the Faculty of Medicine has established a support system to help our faculty and students achieve their goals.

After obtaining a medical license, our graduates have been actively involved in clinical practice, medical research and education, and clinical administration in the Sanin region as well as across the country.
